Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. is located in Barriere, British Columbia, Canada.

For the last 25 years Shawn Fadear has owned and operated Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. As of August, 2024 Jazz Sterling became the new Owner of Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. Jazz had been a Supervisor for the Company for the last 15 years before taking over the Company in 2024. Clients will be happy to know that Shawn Fadear has stayed on to assist Jazz in the capacity of Consultant. Shawn Fadear is also a member of Simpcw First Nation.

Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. operates a crew of qualified gabion installers.

We initially began working exclusively in Kamloops B.C. to meet the needs of the growing housing market. However, we soon built a reputation for constructing and installing high quality Gabion Walls, Gabion Mattresses and Gabion Cladding. We now work all over British Columbia, Alberta and the Oilsands.

Columbia Icefields Skywalk Project:

Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. is very proud to have had a part in the Award winning Columbia Icefields Skywalk Project!

Outstanding in its Architectural Design, this Project received the prestigious Governor General Award for Excellence!

SLIDE 5 ROCK FALL IMPACT BERM:

In 2008, Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. completed the first Gabion Rock Fall Impact Berm to be constructed in all of North America.

The Ministry of Highways Project is located on Hwy. #1 in the Fraser Canyon, 1 km. south of Hells Gate, B.C.

The structure is a total of 96 m. long. The 50 m. mid section is 8 m. high and 7 m. wide at the base. The 2 end sections are 7 and 6 m. high.

Wire baskets, or gabions contain approximately 1,500 m3 of rock (214 truckloads) and enclose 4000 m3 (571 truckloads) of pit run gravel were used in this project.

The embankment berm replaces a 3 m. high cement berm that was constructed in 1960 and is meant to shield the highway from large rocks that fall in the slide area.

Designed to withstand rock impacts of up to 10,000 kj. (kilojoules), the impact side of the structure is draped with conveyor belting to protect the wire baskets at the time of impact.

Ralph Klein Legacy Park - Calgary, AB

Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. is proud to have constructed all the gabion walls and installed all the gabion cladding at the Ralph Klein Park.

The Ralph Klein Legacy Park in Calgary, Alberta was constructed as part of the Shepard's Wetlands Stormwater Diversion Project and includes a 30 hectare Wetland Park and the Ralph Klein Environmental Education Centre.

The Ralph Klein Park is the first park to be named for a former Mayor during his lifetime.

Expert Gabion Wall Solutions

Gabion Wall Systems Ltd. has over 25 years of experience in the construction of gabion retaining walls, gabion mattresses and gabion cladding. Whether it is a small residential retaining wall, or a large industrial project, we have the experience and the dedication to complete the project on time and on budget.

Gabions - Woven Mesh:

Woven mesh gabion baskets are used in the construction of retaining walls, channel linings and weirs for erosion control projects. These gabion baskets are manufactured from 8x10 double twisted hexagonal galvanized woven steel wire mesh.

Woven mesh gabion baskets are available in a variety of different sizes. They come in 1/2 or 1 m. high and 2, 3 or 4 m. long and are filled with common river type rock or fractured rock.

Flexibility is an important benefit of any gabion structure. Since the baskets are constructed of galvanized mesh wire and filled with rock, the flexibility of a gabion structure allows it to withstand pressure without deforming, cracking or breaking as in the case of concrete and other materials.

The steel wire used in the manufacture of the gabion is heavily zinc coated soft temper steel. For gabions used in salt, fresh water, acid soil or wherever the risk of corrosion is present, a PVC coating is then applied to provide additional protection.

There are very few limits when it comes to the construction of a gabion wall. Walls can be constructed following grade along a road, tapered, stepped, vertical or constructed with back batter depending on the project requirements. A concrete cap and fence can be added to the top of the gabion wall to complete the look!

Gabions - Welded Wire:

Welded wire gabions, (often referred to as Architectural Gabions) are made of heavy gauge welded wire mesh.

For the "Do It Yourselfer" with a small gabion wall to construct, welded wire gabions are a great choice!

It is made of welded wire gabion walls and is the first chemical-free public outdoor pool to be built in Canada.

Gabions - Mattresses & Reno Mattresses:

Gabion mattresses are a low profile structure. They are shallow, flat wire mesh baskets and are filled with stone. Since mattresses are thin and flexible, they are ideally suited for use in situations where the structure needs to conform to the surface, such as in channels, riverbeds or on slopes. These mattresses are used in along riverbeds, stream banks, slopes and other erosion prone areas to stabilize the soil and protect against erosion by dispersing the energy of flowing water against erosion caused by water flow.

Mattresses are a flexible mesh system, which have many advantages over block walls, reinforced concrete or concrete mattresses. Since they are flexible, a gabion mattress can adapt to differential settlements, while maintaining their functionality. They are used in environments with heavy water flow because they provide erosion control and prevent the loss of soil. Mattresses conform to the movement of both water and soil making them a versatile choice. They are used in landscape and engineering projects.

The lacing procedure of a gabion mattress ensures that the unit acts as one structure. Both gabion baskets and reno mattresses are able to easily dissipate water through the structure without build up of water pressure.

The configuration is of double twisted hexagonally woven mesh, which will not unravel. Both gabion baskets and gabion mattresses come standard with zinc galvanizing and can also be ordered with an additional PVC coating for installation where there is constant water. A gabion mattress type structure is an environmentally friendly solution, since vegetation may easily establish, in time re-creating the pre-existing environment.

Gabion mattresses are divided into cells by means of internal diaphragms positioned at 1m. centers. Gabion mattress units are 100 feet (30m.) long.

Reno mattresses are a proprietary system that offers versatility and flexibility for erosion control in applications where a thicker gabion mattress is not required.

Gabions - Gabion Cladding:

Gabion cladding is made of welded wire gabions that are filled with aggregate or other durable products such as recycled bricks, synthetic glass, etc. It has been widely used in Europe for many years due to its effectiveness in providing an aesthetic appeal to any building structure. Gabion cladding is now used in North America and is gaining popularity in other regions as an architectural feature.

Gabion cladding solutions offer an innovative way to enhance building facades, while providing additional stability and weather resistance. The cladding can be customized with different materials to create unique and visually appealing facades.

Gabion cladding is made up of smaller sized gabion welded wire cages, 9"-12" thick. The cages are anchored to a structural wall with a fastening system and then filled in place with stone. The result is a unique feature wall in comparison to an exposed concrete wall.
